The Yeerongpilly Goodlife gym, part of Australia’s Goodlife Health Clubs, introduces a fresh perspective on gym lighting. This project showcases how strategic lighting can elevate the gym experience, by creating zones that focus on the practical aspects of illuminating various gym zones—ranging from the entrance and amenities to the cardio, weights, and studio areas.

LUMINAIRE SELECTION & THEIR APPLICATION

• Helium Range Downlights: Utilised in the amenities, lounge area, and entrance, these downlights create a welcoming atmosphere. Their deployment ensures these spaces are well-lit, promoting a positive first impression and a comfortable transition zone for gym-goers. A combination of Helium recessed downlights and pendant cans, equipped with 15-degree narrow beam optics, generates focused light pools along the main gym pathways. This design guides members through the gym, enhancing safety and navigation.
• 900mm Krypton: Designated for the functional training area, these lights offer ample brightness without overwhelming glare, making the space optimal for focused training sessions.
• Centauri: Chosen for both the weights and cardio areas, suspended versions of the Centauri Minor were used to ensure a uniformly lit space with reduced glare, creating a conducive environment for workouts. A recessed version was also used in the Pilates and studio areas along with the Helium Downlights to provide a flexible lighting setup capable of adapting to various activity levels and requirements.
• BEGA Linear Wall Luminaire: These luminaires, with their stunning black finish, are installed at vanities and dry benches in the bathrooms. They provide excellent vertical illumination, which is vital for several reasons: it enhances visibility and minimises shadows that can distort appearance; it promotes safety by illuminating potential hazards in wet, slippery environments; it improves the aesthetic appeal and ambience, making the space feel more luxurious and relaxing; and it ensures accurate colour rendering, crucial for tasks requiring true colour perception.

LIGHTING STRATEGY

• Free Weight, Cardio, and Machine Areas: These zones benefit from low-glare, high-mount luminaires that evenly distribute light, preventing harsh shadows and ensuring all equipment is visible. With an illumination level averaging over 300 lux, these areas are inviting and safe. Strategic placement of lights enhances the visibility of vertical surfaces and delineates specific workout zones, like sled tracks and treadmills, with continuous linear luminaires.
• Studio 1: Here, the lighting is particularly dynamic, with long linear Centauri runs and staggered narrow beam downlights creating adaptable scenes. Adjustable narrow beam downlights focus on the stage and instructor, while narrow beam lights create a staggered pin spot effect throughout the studio, aiding in spatial orientation during classes.
