The University of Technology Sydney project is a complete refurbishment of levels 2 and 3, which used to be the Faculty of Business. Level 2 was turned into a collaborative ‘Pod Classroom’ with an integrated AV/IT solution that supports an array of various teaching and learning modes. The room can be set up to support small or large learning groups from 3 to 160 students. This classroom also can be configured to suit a Traditional Seminar set up.
The challenge from a lighting design point of view was to achieve the right levels no matter which configuration is chosen. The recessed luminaire Inplana from Trilux was the perfect fit. From a technical side – the light was to be integrated in the circular acoustic panels above the classroom and the slimness of the Inplana, and its light weight, made it the right candidate.
Level 3 consists of an academic offices, administration and open plan HDR student areas. Plenty of internal glazing provides a bright ‘daylight rich’ environment, complemented by the use of warm and natural timbers.
From the lighting perspective, a solution that can be tailor made to fit in the various arrangement of glazing and ceilings, whilst minimising glare and maximising output to give this right daylight impression, enhancing the timber aspect, and make the space suitable for office use.
A linear lighting system was the right answer, allowing the consistency of distribution and light quality, regardless of the mounting type chosen, and cut to fit within the architectural requirements. The luminaire’s diffuser was a perfect selection with a great glare control which maximizes lighting output.
